A Long and Interesting History
Ontario fishing adventures, resorts huntingOjibway and Cree First Nations have been hunting and trapping in NW Ontario for over 1000 years. European traders and the Hudson Bay Company arrived in the 17th century, but the local towns didn't form until 1926 when gold was discovered up in Red Lake. Hundreds of prospectors flooded into the area. By 1936, bush planes made Red Lake, Gold Pines, and Hudson airports the busiest in the world. The lumber industry developed to supply the gold mines. Anglers and hunters travelled to the pristine wilderness long before the gravel highway (Hwy 105/502) opened in 1947. The first outpost cabin at Wine Lake was built in 1938. A local Cree Indian man and his English war bride founded our camp in the 1940's. She was so intrigued by the beauty and splendor of living in such a remote area that she wrote a book on the subject (available at Wine Lake Camp).

In this book, The Last Resort, she wrote of her life and experiences in the Ontario wilderness. Although many years have since passed, we have taken care to maintain a rustic backwoods appeal. Join us and take a step back in time. Experience the look and feel of earlier days with charming log cabins, wood fired stoves, woolen blankets, an ice house, and the intimacy created by a campfire on a starlit evening.

Your own private walleye pond!
"My husband has wanted me to come with him to Wine Lake Camp for years. They talk about it for months before and months after each trip. I really thought it was going to be too rugged for me.

I couldn't imagine no electricity or running water, and an out house. No way! But our friend, Al Marsh, calls it "paradise" and wife Nancy said, "You are not going on a vacation, you are going on an adventure! They were both right. It was fabulous. You lose track of time here but savor every moment." C.Bell, Fort Wayne, IN.
